"Novus Caelum" ("New Sky" in Latin) is an animation inspired by the song "Bau Troi Moi" from Vietnamese pop band daLab.The short explored semi-surreal visual storytelling in combination with non-photorealistic rendering. Novus Annus

Client: N/A
Project type: Personal
Software used: Blender, Adobe Premiere Pro

"Novus Annus" ("New Year" in Latin) was made on the occasion of Tet holidays in Vietnam. The animation depicts a typical meal ,which, includes some traditional dishes and desserts usually eaten during Tet holidays. The short avoids cliché imagery commonly seen during Tet, such as the overly used red colour and the typical focus on banh chung.Instead, shades of wooden brown and green are used to give warmth and a vintage feeling. Pork and eggs stew, a dish also served outside of Tet, takes centre stage, highlighting family values. Nhu Quynh's "Don Xuan" can be heard playing on the radio, and the sounds of kids having fun outside are added to give the scene a sense of nostalgia. Finally, dust particles and sun rays add to the natural feel of the scene."Novus Annus" continues the exploration of non-photorealistic rendering, while also placing a larger focus on storytelling both visually and auditorily.
